Fate or chance? Does either affect our lives? Christine Steeves asks that very question in her delightful short story MIDNIGHT FIND. Tina was supposed to be on her honeymoon. Instead she was going on it alone. Her intended ran off with another. Was it chance or fate that had her meet the charming Olive on the plane? Olive suggested that she seek out a specific dating service that was well respected and known to give the clients exactly who and what they need. Was it chance that she got into just that cab and asked the driver to take her to a different hotel other than the one she was to share with her intended? And was it fate that she did use the dating services, Distinguished Dates? And what Tina chose was not the best looking or what one would think of as vavoom. No, she picked a balding, funny man who wore cartoon sneakers! Yet he made her tingle. But Patrick had baggage of his own – an estranged twin for one. I won’t tell you more, you’ll have to read it read it for yourself – suffice to say, Patrick’s baggage is worth reading but even more worth reading is the ending! Stay tuned for a bumpy ride! Christine I Steeves has combined a love story with a twist that will have you saying…well so many things. A fun ending that will challenge what you think you know. With MINDNIGHT FIND, Ms. Steeves joins the ranks of great writers in the style of THE DARK ROOM, TWILIGHT ZONE, and Stephen King if he wrote romance! Excellent! On a scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 5. Randal Bristol is a special kind of PI. He is also a fixer. Not only does he handle any investigation but he and his firm Malibu Confidential will ensure that their client’s problems will not be fodder for any tabloids. Nothing is too small or too large for Randall as he investigates blackmail, searches for the missing script of legend, and hunts for a terrorist. And he must try to save him business and home as a wildfire threatens to destroy them. When nine masked and armed men and women disrupt a film shoot and steal the footage, Randall goes to work. Mr. Weisenfeld writes in such a way that I can see MALIBU CONFIDENTIAL like a movie. I see Randall as he is making love, rushing here or there, Archer talking to Michelle about the body she had seen years ago that might have been Howard Hughes (she saved fingernails and hair), and Donna’s assault. He paints beautiful, active pictures with his words. All of the characters Mr. Weisenfeld has created are fun, interesting and bring various parts and life to the story. Each and every one has a valid place in the story. They bring life to an already strong tale. MALIBU CONFIDENTIAL is a combination of both old PIs and new PIs; I see Spencer and Rockford and Magnum as well as Sam Spade. The best all rolled into one. Excellent. On a scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 5. Reviewed by Dr. Cynthia Lea Clark, Psy.D. MHt.
