SHOOTING
GALLERY
Hailey Lind
Signet, $6.99, 352 pp.,
ISBN: 0-451-21973-2
Art forger cum art restorer Annie Kincaid knows the art underworld inside
and out. After all, her grandfather, renowned art forger Georges LeFleur,
taught her everything he knows, and he taught her well. These days, though,
she is eking out a living doing art restorations and faux painting.
While visiting the exhibit of macabre artist Seamus McGraw, she discovers
one of the exhibits is the artists dead body hanging
from a tree. In the commotion, a minor Chagall is stolen from a noted
museum, and her friend Bryan is suspected. In addition, an art collector
she meets at the exhibit hires her to retrieve a sculpture that was sent
to the sculptor, Robert Pascal, for repairs and never returned.
So begins this fast-paced, thoroughly enjoyable novel. From Annies
novel approach to persuade Pascal to meet with her, to her
relationship with a sexy art thief who she suspects took the Chagall,
to her mothers unexpected (not to mention odd) visit, Annies
adventures are non-stop. With the help of her quirky group of friends,
she manages to get in, and out of, some tight spots, and lives to tell
about it.
A highly recommended read--I intend to pick up Annie Kincaids first
adventure, FEINT OF ART, and I will be looking forward to Linds
next book.
