KILL
A PAINTED PONY
Kelsy George
Double Dragon ePublishing, Inc., September 2005,
$5.99, 189 pages
ISBN: 1-55404-286-0
Annabelle Oakes, performing as Annabelle Oaklee, is billed as the star
attraction for the Cheyenne Rodeo Association. Her horse acrobats, trick
shooting, and death defying knife throwing brings many spectators into
the arena. A perfectionist, she is never satisfied with the performances
acceptable a month ago, even if they were crowd pleasers. She is constantly
improving and changing her set.
In the midst of one of her performances, Kieran Hawes, her first love,
steps into her life again. His appearance is not just a coincidence or
a social call. He needs her help. Playing the part all too well, and with
all of the benefits, he becomes her new lover while investigating the
rodeos connection to a street drug responsible for several deaths.
Annie begins to wonder if her motivation to help Kier is moral or physical.
He pushes her buttons, and emotions once under control are now a live
wire.
But justice has a heavy price. One personal disaster after another strikes
Annie. Her workshop and gallery in Wichita are set on fire, her inventory
of restored carousel ponies is destroyed, and her best friend is killed.
If its meant as a warning to back off, the message is lost. Annies
had too much taken from her already and pushes her limits for answers.
Using the backdrop of a rodeo, Ms. George brings modern issues to the
forefront. I imagine that if the Old West Annie Oakley were in the 21st
century, she would be the authors Annie. As fast paced and exciting
as sitting through a live rodeo, Ms. George keeps your adrenaline running
with this one. I really liked KILL A PAINTED PONY.
