Book CoverDead Witness
Joylene Nowell Butler
MuseItUP Publishing, July 2008
ISBN: 978-1-927361-07-8

When Valerie McCormick wins a mini vacation she is ecstatic to take some time away from her family.  Although she loves her husband and two daughters, she needs some much needed time to herself.  Agreeing to run a quick errand for her husband – check out a boat at the Marina, she stumbles on a cold blooded murder.  She runs, leaving her camera behind to the nearest police station.  But doing her civic duty isn’t easy.  The murderer is a major kingpin who takes delight in not only eluding the police but murdering anyone who crosses him.  Now he has his sights on Valerie.

The two murdered victims, Valerie witnessed were FBI agents so the FBI step in.  They agree to protect Valerie and her family but it becomes complicated as Valerie is a Canadian as is Miguel DeOlmos.

Of course the best plans go awry and the FBI with the help of the Canadian police fake Valerie’s death.  However, her brother isn’t buying that she is body in the car explosion.  In the meantime, somehow Miguel is right behind them…..

DEAD WITNESS is a twisty turny cat and mouse game.  Who to trust?  Who is betraying Valerie and the FBI?  Will Valerie live to testify?

DEAD WITNESS is an easy, fun read.  I enjoyed it.  Plus it is an interesting view of two countries differences in how they police (Canada and the US).  Worth the read.

On a scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 4.2.

Book CoverForecast for Murder: A Nora Huggins Mystery
John Russo
MuseItUp Publishing, December 2011
ISBN: 978-1-927361-45-0

Nora Huggins joins her reading group for several days of discussing books at an Inn on Block Island.  Her reading group consists of twelve members, each with very distinct personalities.  But the Inn employees have personalities of their own.  Little did the group know that they were walking into an inheritance dispute, a philandering partner, a jealous spouse and of course, murder.

When one of the Inn’s partners is murdered, Nora sticks her nose in and aids the police with info she collects.  And she is surprised to discover that one of their own members has been having an affair at Block Island….

As storm cuts all creating more stress and the search for who the killer is goes on.

FORECAST FOR MURDER is a charming cozy.  It is a fast, easy read.  Although, it is a little predictable, it is still a good escape from one’s own life into another world.  It is well written with descriptions so vivid that I felt like I was there on Block Island with them.

On a scale of 1 to 5, I give is a 4.3.
