Uranus Gives Us a Jump Start

Uranus is the windfall planet, and financial astrologer Kaye Shinker says Uranus is the most important financial planet even though Saturn and Jupiter are the traditional business planets. Jupiter rules promotion and marketing; Saturn rules accounting and the bottom line. Uranus, on the other hand, rules creativity and unique or electrical ideas. Uranus also rules democratic notions, and there’s a Uranian twist to the corporate suggestion box or corporate intrapreneuring. Entrepreneuring and professional practices are closely related to Uranus because they represent independent thinking and unique working methods.

On May 27th, Uranus moved from Pisces into Aries, beginning a new cycle that lasts approximately 84 years. The last two ingress dates were March 31, 1927, and February 9, 1844. Uranus spends nearly seven years in each sign during a cycle of the zodiac, and its movement through a sign usually signals important changes as a result of a series of smaller, but insightful and important developments.

We can look back on the late 1920s and early 1930s and say, yes, the entire economy changed forever during those years. The United States economy went from the opulence of the flapper era through the stock market crash and the early stages of the depression while Uranus was in Aries.

Uranus fosters democracy, and the New Deal was a major shift in the distribution of wealth and financial security. Families lost their homes and farms because they couldn’t pay off or renew one-year mortgages, the most common mortgage at the beginning of the depression. Our current system of long-term mortgages grew out of that Uranus in Aries cycle and is undergoing major restructuring now as Uranus returns to Aries.

The financial institutions and protections that were put in place as a result of abuses in the 1920s are also undergoing changes today, and new regulations to protect individual interests from market manipulators will go into effect while Uranus is in Aries again. The old regulations were, in effect, splitting apart at the seams during the final years of the old cycle, but the changes will take place in the new cycle.

One important point about Uranian impacts on the economy is that Uranus creates windfalls and millionaires, but it also protects small businesses and individuals who think for themselves instead of following trends.

Charles Lindbergh made his solo flight across the Atlantic on May 10, 1927, only a few weeks after Uranus entered Aries. On April 7, 1927, a week and a day after Uranus entered Aries, the Bell Telephone company transmitted a picture of Herbert Hoover as the first public demonstration of television.

So what can we expect while Uranus is in Aries now?

Oddly enough, Uranus isn’t considered well-placed in Aries. Uranus rules Aquarius and is in its element in all Air signs (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius). In Aries, Uranus is peregrine, meaning it wanders or doesn’t have standing and natural support for its actions. The planet of the unexpected does the unexpected in Aries, but it does the unexpected in unexpected ways. In short, we don’t know. Uranus’s natural tendency is to surprise us, but in Aries, it has to work around resistance and create ways around obstacles before anything dramatic happens.

Uranus in Aries, then, favors the small business owner and the independent professional and the mechanic fiddling with things in the garage. Uranus favors the tinkerer, the person who makes time to return to a problem whenever he or she has a new insight or idea. Although we see sweeping changes in retrospect, most of those changes began with individuals who did what everyone said they couldn’t.

Jupiter enters Aries on June 6th, and Jupiter and Uranus together equal good luck, sometimes luck on the rebound from apparent disasters. Jupiter is at home in Aries, which is one of the Fire signs. Between them, the two planets moving into Aries favor small and independent businesses that solve problems big businesses couldn’t solve. Some of those problems simply take more time and thought than they appear to be worth for larger businesses. In other cases, a person working alone gets interested in a question or problem and just sticks with it until a new method or answer is found.

So we can expect the economic recovery to trickle down to individuals and families this year. We can expect a disproportionate share of economic growth to come from small businesses that either begin during this cycle or that grow significantly during the years Uranus is in Aries.

But we can also expect sweeping political changes from electronic advances. By the time Uranus moves on to Taurus, we’ll either be voting electronically from our home computers or seeing other major election reform such as an end to the electoral college. President Roosevelt campaigned from the back of a train in whistle-stop tours across the country while Uranus was in Aries during the 20th century; President Obama keeps in touch with friends on his Blackberry. Blogs spread news faster than traditional media, and the entire publishing world will undergo major changes during this cycle.

Barriers will come down. Traditions will be trampled, and we’ll miss some of them. We’ll gain flexibility and freedom.

Uranus is also the planet of scientific advancement. In the last cycle, the big advances were air travel. During this cycle, the world’s first spaceport expects to send its first commercial flights into space. When Uranus entered Aries in 1927, the first programmable computer was 9 years off into the future, and the internet was 32 years into the future. The Germans flew their first rockets during World War II. The only thing it’s really safe to predict about Uranus and scientific advances is that the seeds will be planted in the next seven years for advances over the next 84 years that will change our world at least as dramatically as it changed during the last cycle.

Every change creates opportunities for small businesses and independent contractors. New products have to be installed or serviced. Supplemental products need to be developed. My smartphone needs a case and a charger and software. My computer needs a geek who understands what I don’t. And, oh, yes, I just paid for a year’s subscription to an online program that lets me check my calendar, upgrade my task list or find a phone number from my main computer or my netbook or my smartphone. It’s exponential.

So Uranus in Aries provides a jump start for businesses and ideas and change. Jupiter expands and promotes and distributes. People get their power back. This is the action year, and in 2011 we’ll see Jupiter moving into Taurus and giving us a serious financial flow. In the meantime, fortunately for most of us, the financial movement is in the right direction and affecting the general public first. And isn’t that a change?

Mary O’Gara, Ph.D.
